It means a lot to different generations. Jersey has always been Jersey. There has always been a culture in Jersey for music and dance that goes back to the \u201970s and even the \u201960s with the whole jazz movement. In the \u201980s, however, Jersey had some of the best clubs, like Zanzibar, Sensations, and a whole bunch of other spots that people could research. So, to them, that\u2019s their club music. Then, over time, when you get into the \u201990s, I remember being a little boy, and there used to be club mixtapes, but it wasn\u2019t Jersey Club as we know it now. These were songs that were from Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit \u2014 songs like \u201cIt\u2019s Time for the Perculator,\u201d \u201cHit It from the Back,\u201d \u201cYou Better Snap,\u201d \u201cDookie Booty\u201d \u2014 all these inappropriate songs that I had to sneak and listen to on this tape.<\/p>\n<p><!-- TAPE IMAGE --><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center; margin: 30px 0;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dancemogul.com\/news\/what-is-jersey-club-the-dancer-perspective-pt-1\/tape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dancemogul.com\/news\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/tape.jpg\" alt=\"Jersey Club mixtape - the culture before the name\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 18px;\">These club tapes were circulating around Jersey, and in the \u201990s, that\u2019s when the whole house party scene became prevalent. House parties were the place where kids would come to listen to raunchy music, and they were doing raunchy things. They would do different dances to club music like the Wall, the Lock It Up\/Stolen Car, etc. So, therein lies the dancing with the actual scene and atmosphere being cultivated.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 22px; color: #000000; margin: 30px 0 20px 0;\">The Elements Come Together<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 18px;\"><strong style=\"color: #00ffff;\">Kamille King:<\/strong> Wow, so this was bubbling in the \u201990s?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 18px;\"><strong>Anthony \u201cSolo\u201d Harris:<\/strong> Yes. That\u2019s when all the elements were coming together with the young people in the Essex County community, especially in Newark, NJ. Then, you move into the early 2000s. This is where DJ Tameil, who is the founder of Jersey Club, comes into play to give us an identity, music-wise.<\/p>\n<p><!-- SOLO AND DJ TAMEIL PHOTO --><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center; margin: 30px 0;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2F920085941666279%2Fphotos%2Fa.1133626703645534%2F1133628740311997%2F%3Ftype%3D3&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"501\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; color: #666666; margin-top: 8px;\"><strong>Anthony \u201cSolo\u201d Harris and DJ Tameil<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 18px;\">Tameil had connections in Baltimore, and their OGs gave Tameil the blessing to remix their style of club music. I don\u2019t like telling other people\u2019s stories, especially while they are still here to tell it, but that\u2019s the person that you really need to interview. He can fill in all those gaps for you. But he came back with that blessing, and he was the king and the founder of making the type of music that we all started partying to in the early 2000s. That\u2019s what Jersey Club is now in terms of what you hear. It\u2019s DJ Tameil\u2019s musical advancement. At that time, he was calling it Brick City Club, being straight from Newark, NJ. He was the one who ushered in the new sound, and then soon after, you had other people like the Brick Bandits, a producer powerhouse of beatmakers. You also had DJs and producers doing their thing. That\u2019s what Jersey Club is now in terms of what you hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px; color: #666666; margin: 8px 0 0 0; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u2014 Anthony \u201cSolo\u201d Harris<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 22px; color: #000000; margin: 30px 0 20px 0;\">Brick City Dancers: Setting the Blueprint<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 18px;\">Along with the sound taking shape, you had a local dance group that went mainstream called the Brick City Dancers. They were the main ones that were doing shows, traveling, dancing to the club music that we were hearing. They were taking the party and putting it on stage. What made them popular was that now you\u2019re seeing what kids were doing behind the scenes. Parents didn\u2019t notice. Parents didn\u2019t know what was going on in the house parties. But when they brought it on stage, we were all excited as young people because we knew what they were doing. They\u2019re doing all the inappropriate moves, but it\u2019s done in a way where it\u2019s acceptable to everybody.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 18px;\">That was the prominent group that was showcasing different dances to club music. There were other dancers and people making up dances and partying, but BCD set the tone for what was to come in the new millennium. I call the \u201990s era the Freestyle\/Improv Era. A lot of the movements were done off of a feeling, and everyone did the main dances, but they all did them in their own unique way. This was the beginning of everything you see now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 18px;\">BCD (Brick City Dancers) is the second generation of New Jersey\u2019s street dance movement. This legendary dance group is responsible for the dance resurgence in New Jersey in the early \u201990s. With the guidance of Basil Harris and Barbara Ramirez, these young men set the blueprint for all dancers and crews throughout NJ. The innovators are Major, NyJohn, Mark, Faheem, and Shaheed. BCD was the first dance group with diverse styles of street dance to open their own show at New Jersey\u2019s prestigious NJPAC, appear on national television multiple times, and set the landscape for popular dance hangouts like Skate 22 and Branch Brook Park and a host of other inaugural events and opportunities around the country. I was watching as a little kid. I remember EVERYTHING. They would do all the big talent shows down at Symphony Hall and all over \u2014 and WIN. They were the faces of dance in the community of Newark, NJ.
