Dance Mogul:<\/strong><\/span> Can you describe the moment you found out you\u2019d be performing at the VMAs? What was your initial reaction?<\/p>\n

Angie:<\/strong><\/em><\/span> I remember receiving an email from my agent with the words, \u201cYou\u2019re booked!\u201d Jumping with excitement, I called my mom. My emotions were so overwhelming, I struggled to get the words out. It took a while before I could share the news with friends because the reality felt so surreal.<\/p>\n

Dance Mogul:<\/strong> <\/span>Walk us through your preparation process for the VMA performance. How did you and your team get ready for such a big stage?<\/p>\n

Angie:<\/span><\/em><\/strong> We had a rigorous two-week rehearsal for a 10-minute performance. Our primary aim was to channel the energy Shakira exudes on stage. With Charm La\u2019Donna\u2019s efficient guidance and the positive atmosphere she cultivated, we mastered our routines in a short span, feeling confident for the performance.<\/p>\n

Dance Mogul:<\/strong><\/span> What was the most memorable part of your VMA performance? Any standout moments or unexpected challenges?<\/p>\n

Angie:<\/span><\/strong><\/em> The entire performance was electrifying. The arena’s energy when Shakira entered was palpable. The highlight for me was mimicking Shakira\u2019s iconic hip movements during \u201cWhenever, Wherever.\u201d Even now, recalling that moment gives me chills.<\/p>\n

Dance Mogul: <\/strong><\/span>The VMAs stage is known for its iconic performances. How did you and your team work to make your performance stand out?<\/p>\n

Angie:<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>A standout performance occurs when energy transfers from the stage to the audience, reaching even those at home. The synergy of the creative team, choreography, dancers, and of course, Shakira, made this possible. When all elements aligned, it was pure magic.<\/p>\n

Dance Mogul: <\/span><\/strong>Were there any specific artists or performers at the VMAs that you were excited to meet or collaborate with?<\/p>\n

Angie:<\/span><\/em><\/strong> I was thrilled about collaborating with Charm. Being new to LA, I’ve always held her in high regard. Her contribution to our industry is commendable. She was a delight to work with, significantly enhancing my VMA experience.<\/p>\n

Dance Mogul: <\/span><\/strong>With things balancing out after the pandemic how do you feel award shows like the VMAs can bring the spotlight back on dance and music videos?<\/p>\n

Angie:<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>The pandemic disrupted our industry, but with a return to normalcy, award shows have brought joy back. Music and dance, as influential art forms, are showcased brilliantly in these events. The performances amplify both the artist’s and the dancers’ talents. The post-pandemic era seems to have instilled a deeper appreciation for dancers and their artistry.<\/p>\n

Dance Mogul:<\/span> <\/strong>Can you share any behind-the-scenes stories or anecdotes from your time at the VMAs that the audience might find interesting or surprising?<\/p>\n

Angie:<\/span><\/strong><\/em> Shakira’s hands-on approach was noteworthy. Unlike some artists who might briefly visit rehearsals, she was there daily, matching our commitment and often exceeding it. It\u2019s inspiring to collaborate with an artist who values their craft and acknowledges the dedication behind a stellar performance.<\/p>\n

Dance Mogul: <\/span><\/strong>What advice would you give to aspiring dancers who dream of performing on such a prestigious stage?<\/p>\n

Angie:<\/span><\/strong><\/em> Dream big. Believe in yourself. Surround yourself with positive individuals. With dedication and passion, you can realize any career aspiration. Just last year, watching friends perform at the VMAs, I told myself, “Next year, that\u2019ll be me.” I chased that dream, and it came true!<\/p>\n

Dance Mogul:<\/span><\/strong> What are some of your favorite VMA performances from the past?<\/p>\n

Angie:<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>Of all performances, Brittney Spears\u2019 \u201cSlave for You\u201d in 2001 resonates with me. Every element was unforgettable, especially the iconic use of live animals. Growing up, I idolized Brittney, dreaming of dancing alongside her. That VMA performance will forever be etched in my memory.<\/p>\n


\nDance Mogul:<\/span> <\/strong>Is there anyone you would like to thank for helping you on your journey this far?<\/p>\n

Angie:<\/span><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0I think nothing in my life or career would\u2019ve been possible without God, so I want to thank Him for all these blessings. Another person who has really had my back and pushed me in many ways is a choreographer\/creative director Jeri Slaughter. He was a major reason why I moved to LA and have been given many opportunities. I also want to thank Charm for blindly trusting in me and putting me on for the 2023 VMAs. Lastly, my mom knows how much her support and guidance mean to me, and literally, none of this would have been possible without her. I love you, Mom!<\/p>\n
