The\u00a02024-25 academic year and performance season offer a wealth of new music, world premieres,\u00a0and new festivals that bring students, guest artists, and artistic leaders together from different\u00a0disciplines. From collaborations to international tours, the range of curricular and performance\u00a0opportunities is an essential and unique component of the Juilliard experience.\u00a0Student performances form a significant part of Juilliard\u2019s curriculum, and the 2024-25 season\u00a0offerings exemplify how Juilliard leads the way and pushes artistic boundaries. A cornerstone of\u00a0this season is a focus on conversations, workshops, master classes, and more that highlight the\u00a0cultural and social importance of the arts. These public programs range from conversations moderated\u00a0by President Woetzel to lectures with featured guests that are illuminated by artistic\u00a0performances complementing each evening\u2019s topic of focus. The 2024-25 Arts and Society\u00a0Series includes the 12th Annual Rev. Now\u00a0in its third season, The New Series features five curated programs spotlighting new and recent\u00a0music and brings students together from across Juilliard\u2019s divisions for cross-genre\u00a0collaborations:<br \/>\n\u2022 A side-by-side performance with Musicians from the New York Philharmonic of music by\u00a0Schoenberg and Boulez, conducted by David Robertson<br \/>\n\u2022 Schoenberg and Beyond, exploring the impact of Arnold Schoenberg on music in the<br \/>\nmodern era through the works of his greatest adherents and detractors<br \/>\n\u2022 A composer spotlight featuring chamber music of Arnhold Creative Associate and alum<br \/>\nJessie Montgomery<br \/>\n\u2022 Our Future Voices: Music and Technology of the Americas, which is also part of<br \/>\nCarnegie Hall\u2019s season-long Nuestros sonidos festival and Juilliard&#8217;s Future Stages<br \/>\n\u2022 Juilliard Pride Songbook, Vol. 2<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Music<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Music Division is led by dean and director <strong>David Serkin Ludwig<\/strong> and includes orchestral\u00a0studies, vocal arts, historical performance, chamber music, jazz studies, contemporary music,\u00a0orchestral conducting, piano, guitar, organ, and composition. The division also hosts a multitude\u00a0of solo recitals throughout the year.<br \/>\nThe <strong>Juilliard Orchestra<\/strong> performs 10 concerts this season, participating in schoolwide<br \/>\ncelebrations of Schoenberg\u2019s and Ives\u2019 150th birthdays. Conductors Gemma New, Louis<br \/>\nLangr\u00e9e, and Ruth Reinhardt make their Juilliard Orchestra debuts, along with Ken Lam, who\u00a0oversees Orchestral Studies at the Tianjin Juilliard School. Returning guest conductors include\u00a0Daniela Candillari, Giancarlo Guererro, alum Jeffrey Milarsky, and Juilliard\u2019s director of\u00a0conducting studies, David Robertson.7<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Premieres of Juilliard-commissioned works by alums bookend the Juilliard Orchestra season: in\u00a0September by Katie Jenkins and in May by Molly Joyce. In addition to conducting the opening\u00a0concert (September 16) as part of the Fall Festival, Robertson also conducts the orchestra\u2019s\u00a0annual Carnegie Hall appearance, which features Mahler\u2019s monumental Third Symphony. The\u00a0orchestra will celebrate the centenary of Gershwin\u2019s Rhapsody in Blue; and in March,\u00a0Juilliard415 and the Juilliard Orchestra come together to play an all-Beethoven program in a\u00a0historically informed performance led by Jakob Lehmann. The Juilliard Orchestra will continue to\u00a0collaborate with other departments throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Juilliard Opera<\/strong> offers three full productions with the Juilliard Orchestra in 2024-25. Mozart\u2019s\u00a0joyous and comic Cos\u00ec fan tutte returns to the school in November under the direction of former\u00a0Juilliard directing fellow Mo Zhou and baton of the Metropolitan Opera\u2019s Patrick Furrer. In\u00a0February, Britten\u2019s eerie The Turn of the Screw will be directed by Mary Birnbaum and\u00a0conducted by Zachary Schwartzman (audiences by department invitation only); and in April,\u00a0Poulenc\u2019s poignant and tragic Dialogues des Carm\u00e9lites, directed by Louisa Muller and\u00a0conducted by alum and Arnhold Creative Associate Matthew Aucoin, will conclude the opera\u00a0season. All three will be livestreamed for online audiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To start off the year, singers from the E<strong>llen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts<\/strong> will\u00a0participate in an exchange program with Helsinki\u2019s Sibelius Academy, performing Nordic and\u00a0American songs from the 20th and 21st centuries in both cities. A group of vocal arts students\u00a0performed in Finland with the Sibelius Academy this past May; the New York presentation will\u00a0take place on September 13 as part of Juilliard\u2019s Fall Festival. Vocal arts students will also\u00a0participate in the annual New York Festival of Song (NYFOS) at Juilliard; Juilliard Songfest; six\u00a0Liederabend series recitals; the annual Vocal Arts Honors Recital; collaborations with Historical\u00a0Performance and Juilliard Orchestra with Louis Langr\u00e9e; and master classes with visiting artists.\u00a0Vocal Arts will also present tenor and alum Joshua Blue in the Alice Tully Vocal Recital at\u00a0Carnegie Hall\u2019s Weill Recital Hall in April.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In addition to The New Series, Juilliard presents a wealth of <strong>new music<\/strong> each season, including\u00a0performances by the contemporary music ensemble AXIOM, under the leadership of Jeffrey\u00a0Milarsky, which this season gives a world premiere by Augusta Read Thomas in honor of her\u00a060th birthday, commissioned by Juilliard; the Percussion Ensemble, directed by Daniel\u00a0Druckman; and numerous opportunities for student composers to have their works premiered or\u00a0workshopped by student ensembles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As part of the Fall Festival, music, dance, and drama students will collaborate on The New:<br \/>\nCelebrating Charles Ives and American Experimentalism in Music, Dance, and Drama, which\u00a0explores the modern American experimentalism movement, on the 150th anniversary of the\u00a0birth of this groundbreaking composer. In November, faculty members and students as well as\u00a0Pre-College faculty members and students will join the Kennedy Center\u2019s new music festival\u00a0Sounds of US curated by Jennifer Koh, an Arnhold Creative Associate and artistic director of the\u00a0Kennedy Center\u2019s Fortas Chamber Music Concerts. The day\u2019s programs, highlighting the\u00a0importance of mentorship and education, include new compositions by Pre-College faculty8\u00a0members Trevor Weston and Alyssa Weinberg and college faculty members David Serkin\u00a0Ludwig and Nina C. Young.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Under the direction of Edward Bilous, the contemporary music offerings continue with the newly\u00a0renamed <strong>Center for Creative Technology<\/strong>, formerly the Center for Innovation and the Arts. The\u00a02024-25 season marks the center\u2019s 25th anniversary, and in March, it will host Future Stages, a\u00a0four-concert festival of art and technology consisting of a collaboration with The New Series for\u00a0Our Future Voices: Music and Technology From the Americas; a celebration of 25 years of\u00a0music-making with cutting-edge technology in Beyond the Machine; a screening of international\u00a0short films scored with original music by Juilliard composers in The Art of the Score; new works\u00a0by music, dance, and drama students and alumni a in The Space Between Us; and a program\u00a0of new interdisciplinary works with the latest emerging technologies in <em>Convergence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Juilliard\u2019s robust <strong>chamber music<\/strong> offerings in 2024-25 include an expanded winter\u00a0ChamberFest in January with seven concerts over five days; the first-year undergraduate\u00a0survey of string quartets by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven; and master classes with artists from\u00a0the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center featuring ensembles from Juilliard\u2019s Honors\u00a0chamber music program. Chamber Music Sundays and Wednesdays at One offer various\u00a0performance opportunities for students. The American Brass Quintet, mixed ensemble,\u00a0fortepiano, and improvised chamber music seminars continue to offer unique opportunities for\u00a0specialized performance in a chamber music setting. Recitals by the Juilliard String Quartet and\u00a0Katarina String Quartet, the graduate resident quartet are also featured, as are collaborations\u00a0with the Vocal Arts department.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Juilliard is also pleased to present several performances by <strong>Ensemble Connect<\/strong>, which is a\u00a0program of Carnegie Hall, Juilliard, and the Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New\u00a0York City Department of Education. This two-year fellowship program prepares young\u00a0professional classical musicians for careers that combine musical excellence with teaching,\u00a0community engagement, advocacy, entrepreneurship, and leadership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ensemble Connect\u00a0presents December, February, and May chamber music performances in Juilliard\u2019s Paul Hall.\u00a0<strong>Juilliard Historical Performance<\/strong> provides a two-year intensive graduate program for students\u00a0specializing in music from the 17th and 18th centuries on period instruments. Juilliard415\u2014its\u00a0period-instrument ensemble\u2014partners across departments at Juilliard for a variety of\u00a0presentations, opening its season on September 17 in the Fall Festival with a concert led by\u00a0Rachel Podger. In October, members of Juilliard415 will tour four cities in China with soprano\u00a0and alum Xenia Puskarz Thomas and will give workshops to students at the Tianjin Juilliard\u00a0School. William Christie returns in January to lead Juilliard415 in a program with soprano SongHee Lee, and in February, the ensemble performs a program of Bach with Yale Schola\u00a0Cantorum and conductor Masaaki Suzuki in New Haven and at Alice Tully Hall. In March,\u00a0Juilliard415 joins the Juilliard Orchestra on an all-Beethoven program conducted by Jakob\u00a0Lehmann.9\u00a0In April, Lionel Meunier directs Juilliard415 in a program of Handel with Juilliard singers, and in\u00a0May, Juilliard415 and the Juilliard Community Chorus will present Corelli in Chiquitos: Music\u00a0From the Missions directed by Historical Performance\u2019s artistic director, Robert Mealy. With\u00a0music from Bolivia and Peru, the program explores the intersections of global and local Baroque\u00a0music, from the time that Jesuit missionaries brought the music of Corelli, Vivaldi, Locatelli, and\u00a0others to Chiquitos, in southeastern Bolivia.Juilliard students and alumni who participated in\u00a0Chiquitos renowned international early music festival in 2018, 2022, and 2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Juilliard Jazz,<\/strong> under the direction of Wynton Marsalis and Aaron Flagg, features a curriculum\u00a0focused on presenting jazz from its American vernacular roots to the entire continuum of styles.\u00a0The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra offers nine performances throughout the 2024-25 season, each\u00a0with a theme exploring inspiration\u2014from pieces influenced by the visual arts and architecture to\u00a0extended pieces by Chico O&#8217;Farrill, Woody Herman, Gerry Mulligan, and Wynton Marsalis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On September 21, the Fall Festival concludes with the first Juilliard Jazz Orchestra concert, a\u00a0program with music by Juilliard faculty member Andy Farber, Ted Nash, and Duke Ellington\u00a0inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and painters Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso,\u00a0and Jackson Pollack. In October, the orchestra will celebrate Afro-Cuban music and composers,\u00a0and in January, the orchestra will open its spring season with a program that honors the\u00a0centenaries of pioneering vocal artists Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, and Nancy Wilson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Small ensemble concerts explore music from New Orleans to bebop and Latin jazz to hard bop.\u00a0The season also showcases work by Jelly Roll Morton, Elmo Hope, Geri Allen, Dorothy\u00a0Donegan, and Shirley Horn as well as music of jazz messengers Horace Silver and Art Blakey,\u00a0among others. In addition, several concerts feature solo instruments\u2014specifically bass, guitar,\u00a0and piano. Concerts take place at Juilliard, Alice Tully Hall, and Dizzy\u2019s Club.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Juilliard Dance<\/strong><br \/>\nJuilliard Dance is led by dean and director of <strong>Alicia Graf Mack<\/strong> and is acclaimed for building\u00a0strong foundations in ballet, modern, and contemporary techniques in the classroom and in\u00a0performance, working with faculty, guest teachers, and internationally renowned, boundarypushing choreographers of the highest level. Annual performance opportunities include\u00a0Choreographers and Composers, New Dances, Spring Dances, Senior Production,\u00a0Choreographic Honors, Juilliard Dance Senior Graduation Concert, and interdisciplinary\u00a0collaborations across the school and with peer organizations, all preparing students for careers\u00a0in today\u2019s dance world. In September, students will perform in R.O.S.E. created by\u00a0choreographer Sharon Eyal, her creative partner Gai Behar, the multi-arts organization Young,\u00a0and DJ Ben UFO at the Park Avenue Armory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A cornerstone of the division\u2019s performance program is the annual <strong>New Dances.<\/strong> Taking place\u00a0December 11-15, New Dances: Edition 2024 features world premieres by Houston Thomas,\u00a0Jenn Freeman, Arnhold Creative Associate Pam Tanowitz, and Yue Yin\u2014all New York-based\u00a0choreographers who are returning to Juilliard to continue working with dance students. Thomas,\u00a0who spent his career with Dresden Semperoper Ballett, works with the first-year class on a10\u00a0piece rooted in ballet that is set to live music. Freeman, an autistic American choreographer,\u00a0performer, and educator, creates work for the second-year class that is based in contemporary\u00a0ideas movement. Tanowitz returns to the school this season as an Arnhold Creative Associate\u00a0after working with students on John Luther Adams\u2019 Crossing Open Ground as part of Juilliard\u2019s\u00a0Earth Month activities in April.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Tanowitz collaborates with musician and Arnhold Creative\u00a0Associate Caroline Shaw on a work that brings world premiere music and a distinct dance\u00a0vernacular to the third-year class. Yin is known for her original movement vocabulary that is\u00a0inspired by Chinese dance, folk, ballet, and contemporary dance movement. For the fourth-year<br \/>\nclass, she choreographs a physically demanding, high energy piece with music by Indonesian\u00a0composer Raja Kirik.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The annual Spring Dances program takes place March 26-29 and brings together foundational\u00a0and contemporary works by eminent choreographers. The program comprises Jose Lim\u00f3n\u2019s A\u00a0Choreographic Offering for the class of 2028; Duo (Extended) 2025 by William Forsythe,\u00a0performed in silence by a cast of dancers from the classes of 2025-27, and staged by Riley\u00a0Watts (BFA \u201907) and Brigel Gjoka; and a new work by Aszure Barton for dancers from the\u00a0classes of 2025-27 that concludes the program with a new live jazz composition by Ambrose\u00a0Akinmusire. For the first time in six years, Spring Dances will include students from all four\u00a0classes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Juilliard Drama<\/strong><br \/>\nJuilliard Drama is led by <strong>Evan Yionoulis,<\/strong> the Richard Rodgers dean and director. The division\u00a0annually presents eight fully staged productions where third- and fourth-year students put their\u00a0training with expert faculty into practice; six are open to the public. In addition, fourth-year actors\u00a0are also featured in short films written by alumni from the school\u2019s Lila Acheson Wallace\u00a0American Playwrights Program, providing graduating actors with practical on-camera\u00a0experience working on film sets with professional directors and crews. The films are screened at\u00a0Lincoln Center in the spring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Fourth-year plays include the four-character American classic Who\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\u00a0by Edward Albee (October 3-6); Lucy Kirkwood\u2019s Mosquitoes (November 8-11); Will Power\u2019s\u00a0The Seven, a hip-hop adaptation of Aeschylus\u2019 Seven Against Thebes (December 13-16); and\u00a0Shakespeare\u2019s Twelfth Night (February 20-23). In addition, students participate in a variety of\u00a0rehearsal projects throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Preparatory Division\u00a0<\/strong>Under the leadership of dean and director <strong>Weston Sprott,<\/strong> the Preparatory Division comprises\u00a0two Saturday music programs for students ages 8 to 18: <strong>Juilliard Pre-College<\/strong> and the <strong>Music\u00a0Advancement Program (MAP).<\/strong> <strong>Anthony McGill<\/strong> serves as MAP\u2019s artistic director.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Pre-College<\/strong> provides a conservatory-style curriculum to advanced young musicians from more\u00a0than 22 countries who exhibit the potential, dedication, and ambition to pursue serious music\u00a0study at the college level. <strong>Music Advancement Program (MAP)<\/strong> is a tuition-free program with a\u00a0mission to increase access to classical music education and cultivate a diverse generation of11\u00a0young musicians to realize their greatest potential. MAP seeks intermediate to advanced music\u00a0students from the New York City Tri-state area who demonstrate a commitment to artistic\u00a0excellence.\u00a0The Preparatory Division is committed to broadening the classical music repertoire and\u00a0providing an artistic education that connects students and teachers with composers from a vast\u00a0diversity of backgrounds by emphasizing and supporting the creation of new music. The\u00a0upcoming season will include more than 20 Juilliard-commissioned works. Major support for this\u00a0endeavor comes from the Kayden Music Commissioning Program at Juilliard Pre-College,\u00a0which launched in 2023 and funds eight to ten new works annually. On November 23 and May\u00a03, the Pre-College Orchestra and Pre-College Symphony, respectively, will premiere new orchestral works co-commissioned with Interlochen Center for the Arts by Jeff Scott and Chen\u00a0Yi under the baton of alum Adam Glaser; in April, two Pre-College Faculty Recitals will feature\u00a0new solo and chamber works.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Among the division\u2019s many performance highlights and collaborative opportunities is the<br \/>\nKennedy Center\u2019s new music festival Sounds of US curated by Arnhold Creative Associate<br \/>\nJennifer Koh. Taking place on November 16, a group of Pre-College students will perform sideby-side with Sprott and faculty member Javier G\u00e1ndara. The day\u2019s programs highlight the\u00a0importance of mentorship and education, presenting new works written by Pre-College faculty\u00a0members Trevor Weston and Alyssa Weinberg, Pre-College student composers, and College\u00a0faculty members David Serkin Ludwig and Nina C. Young. Juilliard has also commissioned\u00a0composer Ang\u00e9lica Negr\u00f3n to write a new work. Additional Pre-College events this season include the Pre-College Symphony conducted by\u00a0Ankush Kumar Bahl; the Pre-College Orchestra conducted by Xian Zhang; Pre-College String\u00a0Orchestra conducted by Nico-Olarte Hayes; Percussion Ensemble; Youth and High School\u00a0Choruses; and Opera Scenes concerts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">MAP students perform in several instrumental and choral ensemble performances. In<br \/>\nDecember, the Wind Ensemble, String Ensemble, and Orchestra wrap up the fall season with\u00a0an eclectic program of works presented in Peter Jay Sharp Theater. In the spring, the MAP\u00a0Composers\u2019 Showcase premieres work by composition majors.
