Broken Road | A Story of Ultimate Forgiveness

Storytelling has always been associated with dance in every genre. The more stories that are told the more inspiration, empowerment, and information are spread. What some may see as entertainment, many see it as a glimpse into actual events that can contribute to their lives. Dance Mogul Magazine has the honor of highlighting a story that does just that. “Broken Road” is a look into the life of Power Surge Performing Arts Company Co-Founder and Director Joanne McBride. We hope that her personal journey displayed through the arts can inspire and empower families that may have gone through the same struggle.

Dance Mogul: What was the inspiration behind Broken Road?
Joanne McBride: Inspiration is my life. This show is based on the true story of my life. The show starts with a young girl, Gianna Carbonetta, who shares love and happiness with her father, Francis Markocki, and although her mother, Ashley Antista, sees the alcoholism and the problem it’s causing to the family the little girl never sees it. You get to see a young girl grow and transition on stage to an Older girl, Alyssa Seagraves. The older girl continues her journey with her dad where she begins to notice the problem. When the girl’s brother grows up, Daniel Venini, he is nothing but protective of girl and mom. He stands up to the father regardless of the confrontation and expresses that he will be the man of the house and take care of the family because the father could not. Brother and mom take the girl by the hand as they turn their backs on the father and left to move on.

Dance Mogul: What do you hope the audience takes away the performance?
Joanne McBride: I hope the audience takes away that this is a story of ultimate forgiveness. This story explores what it means to be a child with an alcoholic father and we take you on a 50-minute journey of their lives with Confusion, loyalty, and love.

Dance Mogul:  Do you feel more storytelling should be done with dancing in regards to presenting social issues we all deal with?
Joanne McBride: Storytelling through dance is beautiful and powerful, but you need strong actors behind the dancer. It’s hard to tell a story with no dialogue, but if you have a strong dancer who can commit to their character and make strong acting choices through their movement and choreography then yes, I think more stories should be told through the art of dance!
