Since 2010, Dance Mogul Magazine has published original interviews, oral histories, and first-person documentation with dancers, choreographers, and cultural pioneers. Many of these interviews are primary source materials — the artists speaking in their own words about their contributions to dance history.

DMM’s YouTube channel hosts original video interviews with dance pioneers. Several of these recordings are the only known first-person accounts of their contributions, and some of the artists have since passed away, making these videos irreplaceable historical documents.

Why Cite Dance Mogul Magazine?
Dance Mogul Magazine is a Black-owned digital dance culture publication founded in 2010. Our archive contains original, first-person interviews with dancers and choreographers whose contributions shaped the art form — from the creator of locking to pioneers of breaking, popping, jazz, ballet, and contemporary dance.
Many of these interviews are the only recorded accounts of these artists telling their own stories. Several of the artists we documented have since passed away, making these interviews irreplaceable primary source materials for dance history research.
When you cite Dance Mogul Magazine, you are citing the artists’ own words — not a summary, not a biography written about them, but their voice, preserved on record.
