About Dance Mogul Magazine
The first Black-owned dance publication in print and digital — built to honor the culture, amplify the artists, and preserve the legacy that made it all possible.
Dance Mogul Magazine was founded in 2010 to do what no one else was doing — tell the stories of dancers who beat the odds, honor the culture that shaped them, and create a platform worthy of the art form they dedicated their lives to. Over 16 years later, that mission has never changed.
A Father, A Son, and the Streets of Newark
Dance Mogul Magazine was born from a father-and-son journey through the streets of Newark, New Jersey. Basil Harris — CEO and Co-Founder — has been an active participant in street dance culture for over 45 years. Growing up in Newark at the birth of hip-hop culture, he was inspired by the older dancers who performed in the community. In 1979, Basil found his own voice through movement — and became one of the first architects of what would eventually become a global dance movement.
When his son Anthony was labeled an at-risk youth, Basil turned to the arts as a bridge. What began as a tool for communication became a life-changing bond. Father and son traveled the country, speaking with dancers from every walk of life — from contemporary stages to street corners — and heard the same message everywhere: dancers needed more press, more opportunities, and more respect. That unanimous voice from the dance community became the foundation of Dance Mogul Magazine.

The Early Days of Dance Mogul Magazine — Where It All Started
Inspiring Self-Empowerment Through Dance
We exist to inspire self-empowerment. Every interview, every cover feature, every story we publish carries the DNA of that original mission — proving that the arts can transform lives, build bridges between generations, and give purpose to those who need it most.
Dance Mogul Magazine covers the full spectrum of dance culture including hip-hop, B-boying, street dance, locking, waacking, voguing, urban dance, ballet, contemporary, and tap — with a consistent focus on the human story behind the movement. We are not just a magazine. We are a movement.

Basil Harris & the Blueprint — Rare Footage from the Culture
These videos are not highlight reels. They are primary source documents of a culture that built itself from the ground up — before the algorithms, before the industry, before the world was paying attention. Basil Harris was there at the beginning, laying the blueprint that every future generation of New Jersey dancers — Brick City Dancers, EnVy, Illmatic Force, and beyond — would follow. Watch the culture that changed the world.
The Awards
Recognizing that dancers are rarely honored for their cultural contributions, Dance Mogul Magazine created two awards to change that permanently.
Honors individuals who have dedicated over 50 percent of their lifetime to uplifting others through the arts and community service. These are the builders — the ones who gave before anyone was watching.
Recognizes dancers who have reached the height of their careers while using their platform and success to elevate those around them. Excellence in the art and excellence in service.
