The Scholar Who Created a Contemporary African Dance Technique

Introduction
Kariamu Welsh did for contemporary African dance what Katherine Dunham did for Caribbean dance and Martha Graham did for modern dance: she codified it. She created the Umfundalai technique, the first systematized contemporary African dance method, and she spent her career as a scholar, choreographer, and teacher building the academic infrastructure that allowed African dance to be studied, taught, and practiced in American universities as a serious discipline.
Historical Context
Welsh was born in 1949 and raised in New York. She studied dance and earned advanced degrees in dance education and philosophy. She spent significant time in Zimbabwe, where she studied traditional Shona and Ndebele dance forms and began developing the movement principles that would become Umfundalai—a Kikongo word meaning “essential.”
The Umfundalai technique is built on seven core principles drawn from pan-African movement traditions: polyrhythm, polycentrism, curvilinearity, dimensionality, epic memory, repetition, and holism. Unlike traditional African dance forms, which are specific to particular ethnic groups and ceremonial contexts, Umfundalai is a contemporary system that abstracts common principles across multiple African traditions into a teachable methodology. It allows dancers to train in African-derived movement without appropriating specific cultural practices.
Welsh spent the majority of her academic career at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she was a professor of dance and founding director of the Institute for African Dance Research and Performance. She published extensively on African and African diasporic dance, edited anthologies, and supervised graduate students who went on to become leading scholars and practitioners in the field.
She created the Umfundalai technique—the first codified contemporary African dance system—giving African dance the pedagogical framework it needed to thrive in American universities.
Cultural Impact Across Generations
Welsh’s contribution is primarily structural. She built the scholarly and pedagogical framework that allows African dance to exist as an academic discipline in American higher education. Before her work, African dance was often taught informally, without a codified technique or a body of supporting scholarship. Welsh provided both. Her publications gave the field its intellectual foundation. Her technique gave it its physical methodology. Her teaching produced the next generation of scholar-practitioners.
Her presence at Temple University made Philadelphia—already home to PHILADANCO and Rennie Harris’s Puremovement—an even more significant center for Black dance. The concentration of major Black dance institutions in a single city is extraordinary, and Welsh’s contribution to that concentration through her academic work at Temple is a critical piece of the story.
