Who Is Brian Puspos?

There are choreographers who follow trends. And then there are choreographers who create them. Brian Puspos belongs firmly in the second category. A Filipino-American dancer, choreographer, recording artist, and creative visionary from Houston, Texas, Puspos has spent nearly two decades building one of the most influential careers in modern dance — and he did it without formal training, without industry connections, and without ever abandoning the city that raised him.

Born on May 2, 1986, Puspos is a two-time World of Dance Male Choreographer of the Year (2012 and 2014), a Clio Award contributor, a recording artist whose debut EP charted on Billboard, and the choreographer behind some of the most-watched dance performances in modern pop music history. He has worked with BTS members Jimin and Jungkook, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, GoldLink, and Marques Houston. His YouTube channel has accumulated over 85 million views. He has taught, performed, and conducted workshops in more than 45 countries across the globe.

And the words tattooed on his arm — "made to be greater" — are not just ink. They are a mission statement that has guided every step of his career.

Houston Roots: A Family Built on Movement

Brian Puspos grew up in a household where movement was the first language. His parents, Filipino immigrants who settled in Houston, were competitive ballroom dancers. The atmosphere in the Puspos home was constant — singing, dancing, performing. Brian has described it as something like a "Filipino Jackson 5," with siblings and relatives always in motion. His father established a talent show specifically for Filipino youth in Houston, providing a platform for cultural expression that directly shaped Brian's early artistic development and launched the careers of several Filipino-American performers.

Puspos attended Cypress Creek High School in Harris County, Texas, where he captained the school's all-male step team. He was self-taught as a dancer, drawing early inspiration from television shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Martin, and spending his teenage years as a backup dancer, choreographing and performing at local talent shows and for various upcoming Houston artists. He later joined Kappa Gamma Phi and the Y.M.P.A Step Team, choreographed for the University of Houston Modern Dance Team, and taught at Marvelous Motion Dance Studio.

Every stage was a classroom. Every performance was preparation for what was coming next.

“Made to be greater.”

America's Best Dance Crew: The National Breakthrough

In 2008, Puspos gained national recognition as a member of SoReal Cru, the Houston-based hip-hop crew that competed on Season 2 of MTV's America's Best Dance Crew. The crew finished as runners-up in the competition — a result that introduced Puspos to millions of viewers and signaled to the industry that his choreographic instincts were sharp enough for the biggest stages.

Four years later, in 2012, he returned to ABDC with Most Wanted Crew for Season 7, further cementing his reputation as one of the most versatile and innovative choreographers in the competitive dance world. Both experiences gave him the platform to transition from regional talent to a nationally recognized creative force — and he never looked back.

Building a Global Choreography Career

What separates Brian Puspos from other choreographers of his generation is the range. He is not locked into a single style, a single artist, or a single market. His choreographic vocabulary blends hip-hop fundamentals with R&B musicality, emotional storytelling, and a precision that makes every routine feel like a short film rather than a dance class exercise. He is widely credited with pioneering a new genre of dance-stylized music videos that has influenced an entire generation of content creators.

His artist collaborations read like a who's who of global pop music. He choreographed routines for Chris Brown spanning over a decade — beginning with the 2011 track "Wet the Bed" and continuing through the viral 2025 collaboration with Bryson Tiller, "It Depends," which inspired global TikTok challenges. He has created choreography for Justin Bieber, including work on "Anyone" in 2021 and more recent releases like "I Do" and "Go Baby" in 2025. He starred as lead dancer in GoldLink's "Spectrum" music video, produced by 88rising in 2016.

But perhaps his most culturally significant work has come through his collaborations with BTS. Puspos choreographed emotional solos for Jimin — including routines for "Serendipity," "My Time," and "Butterfly" — using soft, wave-like hip-hop movement to underscore themes of longing and self-reflection. In 2023, he served as lead choreographer for Jungkook's solo debut single "Seven" (featuring Latto), performing alongside the artist during its live premiere in New York. He also choreographed the dance practice for Jungkook's "Standing Next to You," incorporating dynamic group formations that highlighted the track's disco-influenced energy.

These K-pop collaborations did not just expand his résumé — they introduced his artistry to hundreds of millions of fans worldwide, making him one of the most recognizable choreographic names in the global BTS community.

“Since then Brian has become a true innovator in the dance community recognized for creating a new genre of dance stylized music videos. Today he is one of the world's most sought after choreographers, becoming a masterclass teacher and performing in 45 different countries.”

The Recording Artist: Slow Love and Bangin'

Brian Puspos never saw himself as only a choreographer. Music was always the second dream — the one he was building toward even as his dance career exploded globally. In 2017, as one of the first artists signed to 88rising (the media company that would later break artists like Rich Brian and Joji), he released his debut EP, "Slow Love and Bangin'" (S.L.A.B.). The project was crafted with collaborators including Anderson .Paak, The Stereotypes, Arin Ray, and Nez & Rio. It debuted at number 24 on the Billboard R&B Charts and number 2 on the Apple Music R&B Charts.

He followed that release with "Sweet 290," an independent EP produced with veteran songwriter and producer August Rigo, whose credits include work with One Direction, Chris Brown, BTS, and Justin Bieber. That project was embraced by the Filipino community worldwide and debuted at number 1 overall on the Philippines Apple Music charts — a homecoming moment for an artist whose Filipino heritage has always been central to his identity.

Across Apple Music and Spotify, Puspos has earned over 15 million streams. His music blends smooth R&B delivery with the kind of rhythmic precision you would expect from someone who has spent his life studying the relationship between sound and movement. His style draws from late 1990s and early 2000s R&B — the textures of Dru Hill, the intimacy of Marques Houston, the swagger of early Chris Brown — filtered through his own creative lens as a dancer who understands what music feels like in the body.

Filipino Heritage and Cultural Impact

Brian Puspos has never separated his artistry from his identity. As a Filipino-American, his heritage is not a footnote in his career — it is the foundation. His parents maintained cultural traditions from the Philippines throughout his upbringing, including lively gatherings centered on karaoke and impromptu performances that mirrored the festive atmosphere he experienced during visits to the homeland. His father dedicated over three decades to supporting Filipino nurses through community programs in Houston — a legacy that was honored by the Houston Rockets in April 2025 for its lasting impact on immigrant professionals and youth empowerment.

Puspos carries that legacy forward every time he steps into a studio, onto a stage, or in front of a camera. He represents what is possible when cultural roots are honored rather than abandoned — when a self-taught kid from a Filipino household in Houston can become one of the most influential choreographers on the planet without ever losing sight of where he came from.

“Led by words inked on his arm 'made to be greater' and the dream of becoming the ultimate story teller.”

Why Brian Puspos's Legacy Matters to Dancers Everywhere

Brian Puspos did not wait for permission. He did not go through a traditional pipeline. He was not discovered by an agent or groomed by a label. He was a self-taught kid from Houston who recorded choreography videos, uploaded them to YouTube, traveled the world teaching workshops, and built his reputation one routine at a time until the biggest names in music came calling.

For every young dancer watching from a city that is not Los Angeles or New York, Puspos is proof that geography is not destiny. For every creative who wants to be both a dancer and a musician, he is proof that you do not have to choose. For every Filipino-American artist navigating the intersection of cultural identity and commercial ambition, he is proof that your heritage is not a limitation — it is your superpower.

Dance Mogul Magazine first covered Brian Puspos at Hip Hop International in 2012. At that time, he was already building something extraordinary. More than a decade later, his career has only grown — spanning continents, genres, and generations of fans. He is a living example of what we mean when we talk about the global power of hip-hop dance culture to transform lives and create opportunities that did not exist before.

For dancers, choreographers, and creatives building their own path, Brian Puspos is the blueprint: stay original, stay hungry, and never stop moving.
