Dance Your Way Free, Chapter 5: The Midnight Countdown
One last door. One last dance. The clock tower shakes, the floor drops away, and midnight is almost here. Blindfolded and linked at the ankle, you must jive faster than fear to make it out of the Midnight Palace together.

Chapter 5 at a glance
The trap: a clock tower ballroom where floor panels drop on slow beats.
The deadline: the twelfth midnight chime, or you stay forever.
The dance: Jive — triple steps, rock steps, kicks and flicks.
The rules: the blindfolds and ankle ribbon stay until freedom is earned.
The promise: five doors, five dances, one shared escape.
This jive Halloween story begins with a memory of how a voice tested your breath in the mirrors and a phantom tested your trust in the dark. A beast demanded courage. A Puppet Master tried to steal your voice. Now the last staircase rises through gears as large as cars, and the building's oldest clock is waking up. At the top is one door and a deadline you can hear but cannot see.
In the finale of Dance Your Way Free, our two fictional dancers are still blindfolded and magically linked at the ankle by a crimson ribbon. They have traveled together through four traps. To escape the Midnight Palace before the last Halloween chime, they will need a dance full of fast feet and fearless joy: the jive.
A note on respect, accessibility and creative intent
Dance Your Way Free is an original work of fiction created solely for entertainment. Its blindfolds, magically linked ankles and imaginary dangers are fantasy storytelling devices, not portrayals of blindness, low vision, disability or the lived experiences and abilities of disabled dancers. These stories are in no way intended to mock, disparage or diminish people who are blind, have low vision or live with any disability. Dance Mogul Magazine respects and celebrates dancers of all abilities.
Safety reminder: Please do not recreate the blindfolded, ankle-linked or hazardous stunts described in this fantasy. Dance in a safe and accessible setting, using appropriate instruction, accommodations and support.
How to play
Read the clock tower story and open each choice. The wrong movement sends you back to pick again; the dance-based move advances the escape. Each correct choice draws from recognizable jive technique. This is a fictional interactive story, not a competition or a recorded online vote.
The story
Fiction · A DMM original story
Part 1: The tower
The staircase is so narrow that you climb one careful step at a time, counting under your breath so the ribbon does not catch. Above you, something metallic turns with the slow authority of a machine older than the theater itself. Each gear teeth into the next. Somewhere beyond them, a bell waits for its first strike.
You emerge onto a floor made of small wooden panels. The air smells of hot oil and cold rain. The clock face throws pale light through the walls, but your blindfolds give you no picture of it. The only way to know where the floor ends is to listen. Boards creak; some drop away with a rush of empty air every time the music settles into a slow pulse.
'You have done wonderfully,' the Choreographer says, almost gently. 'But every dancer gets tired. Stop, and you may stay with me forever. I will give you an audience that never leaves.' Somewhere under your feet, a panel falls into darkness.
Then brass erupts from an unseen orchestra. The tune is fast and unreasonably cheerful. Your partner laughs once in disbelief, and you recognize the rhythm: jive. Its little quick steps might fit between the clock's long, dangerous beats. For the first time all night, fear must race something even faster.
Choice 1 · Floor panels drop on the slow beats. How do you cross?
A. Stand still and search for a safe patch
The board beneath you gives way with a crack. For one dizzy second the only thing holding the story together is your partner's hand. Choose again.
B. Use synchronized triple steps on the quick rhythm
You travel with light, quick changes of weight, landing as the dangerous slow beats pass between you. The panels fall behind your heels. Correct — continue to Part 2.
C. Leap separately onto the next panel
The ribbon tightens as you jump in different directions. You lose the count and the landing. Choose again.

Part 2: The kicks
You have crossed the first panels, but the tower is still moving. The song speeds up, and gears begin turning beside the narrow strip of floor you have reached. Their teeth scrape the wood with the sound of huge scissors opening and closing.
Your linked ankle grows warm. The ribbon isn't a chain anymore; it is a reminder of every room in which you learned to feel another person's timing. You know the floor will not let you leap in opposite directions. You know a hurried trick can pull both of you down.
The music offers a new answer. A sharp kick, a quick flick, a return to center. Not every leg action has to travel through the dangerous space between your ankles. The outside legs can answer each other in mirror image while the connected feet keep the same center.
The Choreographer's voice grows impatient. 'You cannot possibly coordinate that without looking.' You smile under the blindfold. You have been coordinating without sight since the first room.
Choice 2 · The gears are closing in. Which kicks can keep you together?
A. Each kick as high as possible
Your legs swing out of time, and the ribbon drags your linked ankles into the gears' path. Choose again.
B. Kick the outside legs in unison, with a shared count
Flick, kick, return. Your outside legs answer each other while the linked ankles hold their shared rhythm. Metal clangs back and the path clears. Correct — continue to Part 3.
C. Stop moving and crouch beneath the gears
The next slow beat drops the floor panel beneath your crouching feet. Choose again.

Part 3: Midnight
The clock begins to strike. One. The sound shakes dust from beams overhead. Two. Every gear seems to stop and listen. Three. You can feel the Choreographer standing directly in your path, though he has made no footsteps.
'Stay,' he says. 'You would never be tired again. Never frightened. Never wrong. All I ask is that you dance when I tell you.' The promise is strangely tempting. You have spent the night being chased, pulled, frightened and tested. Every muscle knows it has worked.
But you remember the doors. Breath in the mirror room. Trust in the abandoned hall. Courage against the beast. A voice that broke the puppet strings. Those lessons are yours now, not his. And your partner's hand is still in yours.
The music has never felt brighter. The last count is arriving. You need one shared ending — not a perfect pose for the Choreographer but a dance that belongs to both of you.
Choice 3 · The midnight chimes begin. What is your last dance move?
A. Finish with joy: a shared turn and kick on the twelfth chime
You laugh together, turn with the same count, then land one final kick as the twelfth chime rings. The ribbon bursts into sparks. Correct — you're free. Read the ending.
B. Accept the Choreographer's offer
You stop moving for one sweet, exhausted moment. The clock keeps dancing without you, and the tower does not open. Choose again.
C. Outrun the final chime
You run faster than your shared ankle can follow. There is no way to outrun midnight. Choose again.
Free — at the twelfth chime
The twelfth note fills the tower, and the whole clock face becomes light. The gears disappear in a rush of gold. For the first time since the applause you remember at the beginning, the blindfold slips gently from your eyes. The crimson ribbon unwinds from both ankles and dissolves into sparks.
You are standing on the sidewalk outside an old theater. The night is cool. Your partner is beside you, breathing hard, and both of you begin laughing — not because the Midnight Palace was harmless, but because it did not take away your ability to dance as yourselves.
Behind you, the marquee flickers once. From the dark lobby comes a quieter voice: 'Every dancer who listens finds the door.' You turn toward the street and take one last step together. The five lessons remain: breath, trust, courage, voice and joy. You never had to dance alone.
This is the final door of Dance Your Way Free. If another reader enters the Midnight Palace tomorrow, your bookmarked chapters can help you lead them through it.

The real performance behind this chapter
The finale draws on a real jive from Dancing with the Stars Season 34. Robert Irwin and professional partner Witney Carson danced to Steppenwolf's 'Born to Be Wild' during the September 16, 2025 premiere. Irwin began with an energetic jump from a vehicle, and the pair earned 15 out of 20 from the two judges scoring that night.
ABC's Good Morning America and ABC-affiliated coverage confirm the song, partners and dance; ABC7 New York reported the score. Our midnight clock, fictional danger and linked dancers are wholly original DMM storytelling. We do not reproduce the performance or claim that it was a Halloween routine.

How to dance your way free: the jive toolkit
The successful choices are rooted in real dance vocabulary. Here is what they mean when practiced safely in a studio, with your eyes open and your feet free:
Triple steps and rock step. Jive uses lively, quick weight changes and a rocking action. Coordination is more important than simply moving faster.
Kicks and flicks. Clear, compact leg actions and a return to center help give jive its bright, percussive character.
Unison without pulling. When two partners share the same rhythm, they can create a mirrored phrase without dragging each other off balance.
A joyful quality. The style is playful and exuberant. In the story, joy becomes a refusal to let fear decide how the last dance ends.
The full series lesson. Contemporary taught breath; tango taught trust; paso doble taught courage; jazz taught voice; and jive lets the pair carry all four lessons into freedom.
Dance is a partnership, not a supernatural challenge. Work with a qualified instructor, adapt movements to your abilities, and put control before spectacle.
