For five straight Series, the 2026 International Dance League season belonged to Brotherhood. The Championship belonged to GRV.

That distinction is the starting point for understanding what happened at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles on Sept. 20. GRV did not arrive as the regular-season leader. The Los Angeles team entered the Championship as the No. 4 seed after an uneven five-event campaign that included second-place finishes in Sydney and at the final Los Angeles Series. One night later, the standings no longer decided the headline. GRV won the event IDL designates as its Championship and became the league's first Season Champion, in front of a sold-out hometown crowd.

The Bracket Gave GRV One More Opening

The Championship reset the stakes. All six professional teams qualified, and regular-season standings set the seeding rather than awarding the title. GRV's opening assignment was No. 3 seed 1MILLION — the same Seoul team it had faced one night earlier. At the Los Angeles Series on Sept. 19, IDL reported that the judges split 3-3 in that matchup and GRV advanced on the fan vote. At the Championship there was no need for a tiebreaker: official results show GRV winning Round 1 by a 6-1 judges' decision, sending the hometown team into a three-team final with Brotherhood and Jam Republic.

A 0.43 Final

The final margin was razor-thin. GRV scored 94.00. Brotherhood, undefeated through the regular season, finished second at 93.57. Jam Republic placed third at 90.86. Less than half a point separated a perfect regular season from a Championship trophy.

More Than an Upset Label

Calling the result an upset is accurate in the narrow competitive sense: IDL itself described the No. 4 seed's run that way. But the word can flatten what league play is supposed to reveal. A season creates several kinds of pressure. Consistency matters. Adaptation matters. Timing matters. So does arriving at the final event able to produce the performance the format rewards.

GRV's regular season was not a straight climb. The official standings show 3 points in New York, 0 in Vancouver, 12 in Sydney, 0 in Seoul and 9 in Los Angeles — 24 regular-season points. The Championship added 13 more, lifting GRV to 37 and second in the final table behind Brotherhood's 82. The numbers make the story clearer: GRV did not erase Brotherhood's season. It authored a different achievement at the end of it.

The Crew Behind the Result

IDL lists GRV as its Los Angeles professional team. The league's team page says the group was founded in 2007, has built its name in the Southern California scene through wins at World of Dance and Vibe, and trains out of Offstage Dance Studio in Anaheim. Its 2026 roster lists Nick Joseph, Ethan Estandian and Kaylar Preite as captains.

Before the finale, Preite gave HerSports a line that now reads like a thesis for the whole night: “Watch. Your perception of dance is and will be changed.”

DMM's interest is not limited to who stood on the podium. A professional league makes team identity visible over time. GRV had to absorb early zero-point nights, find a breakthrough in Sydney, come home with another second-place finish, and then face a seeded bracket where the season could still change. That arc — development under pressure — is exactly what one-night competition coverage tends to miss.

A Judging Change Worth Documenting

IDL's post-Championship recap says the event “introduced an updated judging format, removing the fan vote and adding an additional judge to the panel to place greater emphasis on expert evaluation.” The league named the Pro Division panel as LaTasha Barnes, Shaun Evaristo, Cheyenne Kibblewhite, Handy Yacinthe, Comfort Fedoke, Brandi Chun and Stephen Grey. The public results page still shows fan-vote percentages for Round 1 matchups, so DMM treats the change as applying to the Championship's decisive scoring rather than assuming every round was identical.

DMM analysis: a seven-judge panel cannot split evenly. Set that beside the 3-3 split that sent GRV past 1MILLION on the fan vote the night before, and the change reads as a structural response, not a cosmetic one. It matters because judging is part of the story of professionalizing dance. IDL's published scoresheet weighs ten categories — complexity of choreography, staging, musicality, creativity, stylistic athleticism, cleanliness, technical execution and authenticity, spacing, projection and communication, and stamina. When a title is decided by less than half a point, readers deserve to understand the framework behind the number.

What This Win Puts in the Record Book

Every new league eventually writes a first line in its record book. GRV owns this one: the first IDL Season Champion, and the first proof of how dramatically a final event can change the ending of a season.

That does not shrink what Brotherhood accomplished. It gives the inaugural year more texture. One team set the standard for week-to-week consistency. Another met the Championship moment. The same night, San Diego's Choreo Cookies won the Community Division, with Los Angeles-based V MO second and Dallas' Team Athena third — a reminder that the next generation of league teams is already on the same stage.
