The 12-Week Reset

One season. Three evidence-based pillars. A complete lifestyle framework for mental health -- backed by clinical research.

The 12-Week Reset

Why 12 Weeks?

The number 12 appears across the most significant depression research of the past decade -- not by coincidence, but because of biology. The SMILES dietary trial ran 12 weeks. The Finland DMT randomized controlled trial ran 10 to 12 weeks. The AMMEND nutrition trial ran 12 weeks. High-intensity exercise research pinpoints 12 weeks as the threshold at which neuroplastic change -- new neural connections, sustained BDNF elevation, gut microbiome stabilization -- becomes measurable and lasting. Twelve weeks is one season of your life. It is the minimum investment the research says your brain needs.

The 12-Week Reset -- Three Pillars

Pillar 1: Move. Two to three dance or exercise sessions per week. Any style, any level. Consistent intensity matters more than perfection. Community dance classes and social dance events amplify the benefit through the social connection they provide.

Pillar 2: Eat. Shift toward a Mediterranean-style dietary pattern: increase vegetables, legumes, whole grains, lean protein, oily fish, and olive oil. Reduce processed food, refined sugar, and alcohol. Seek guidance from a nutrition professional -- studies consistently show that professional support produces stronger results.

Pillar 3: Shine. Daily outdoor time in natural light, particularly morning sunlight. Have vitamin D levels tested and supplement if deficient, especially for those with darker skin tones who face greater deficiency risk. Even 20 to 30 minutes of outdoor exposure per day is associated with measurable mood improvement.

Twelve weeks. Two to three sessions per week. Whole foods. Daily sunlight. This is the formula the research has converged on -- and it belongs to everyone.
Why Dance Is Medicine

What to Track

Clinical trials use validated scales like the Beck Depression Inventory and the PHQ-9. A simple daily journal tracking mood, energy, sleep quality, movement, food quality, and sunlight time gives you the data to see your own pattern. Change does not feel dramatic while it is happening. It reveals itself in retrospect.

This Is Not a Cure. It Is a Foundation.

The research does not suggest that lifestyle change replaces clinical care for severe depression. What it establishes -- across hundreds of studies and tens of thousands of participants -- is that movement, nutrition, and sunlight are not supplemental to mental health treatment. They are foundational to it. They can be used alongside therapy and medication, and they represent the most accessible, sustainable, and side-effect-free tools available to every person who is struggling.

The Dance Community as a Healing Community

The dance community has always been a place of refuge, expression, and belonging. What the science is now confirming is that this was never accidental -- it was healing. Every class you show up for, every social dance night, every moment you bring a friend to the floor, is an act of applied medicine. The 12-Week Reset is a science-backed articulation of what our community has always known how to do.
