Dance Your Way Free, Chapter 1: The Mirror That Steals Your Soul

You wake up blindfolded, one ankle bound to your partner’s, in a room full of mirrors whose reflections have started breathing on their own. Only a contemporary dance, danced true, opens the door. Choose your moves.

Chapter 1 at a glance

The trap: a mirror room where reflections move without you.

The dance: Contemporary — breath, counterbalance and release.

The rules: blindfolds stay on; your ankle stays linked to your partner’s.

The lesson: you can’t outrun a reflection. You move through it together.

Next door: Chapter 2, Argentine Tango, Footsteps in the Dark.

Halloween week on Dancing with the Stars sent the ballroom into horror territory. Dance Mogul Magazine is taking it one step further, into a story where you are the dancer. Dance Your Way Free is a five-chapter interactive horror series. Each chapter is a different trap, a different villain’s game and a different dance style, and the only way out is to choose the moves a real dancer would trust.

There’s one more twist. You and your partner are blindfolded the whole way through, and one of your ankles is magically linked to theirs. You can’t see. You can’t run alone. All you have is the music, your breath and each other — which is exactly what dance has always asked of partners.

A note on respect, accessibility and creative intent

Dance Your Way Free is an original work of fiction created solely for entertainment. Its blindfolds, magically linked ankles and imaginary dangers are fantasy storytelling devices, not portrayals of blindness, low vision, disability or the lived experiences and abilities of disabled dancers. These stories are in no way intended to mock, disparage or diminish people who are blind, have low vision or live with any disability. Dance Mogul Magazine respects and celebrates dancers of all abilities.

Safety reminder: Please do not recreate the blindfolded, ankle-linked or hazardous stunts described in this fantasy. Dance in a safe and accessible setting, using appropriate instruction, accommodations and support.

How to play

Read each part of the story. When you reach a choice, tap an option to see what happens. A wrong move sends you back to choose again; the right one tells you to continue. Every correct choice is built on a real contemporary dance principle, explained after the story.

The story

Fiction · A DMM original story

Part 1: The room that watches

The last thing you remember is applause. Then silk across your eyes, cold and tight, and a hush so complete you can hear your own pulse.

You’re lying on a hard wooden floor. Something warm presses against your left ankle — another ankle, another person, breathing fast. Your partner. A ribbon binds the two of you together, and when you tug it, it tightens and hums like a plucked string.

A voice drifts from everywhere at once, smooth as a tailcoat. “Welcome to the Midnight Palace. I am the Choreographer. Five doors stand between you and the street. Each opens to one dance, danced true. Lie to the music, and you stay.”

A metronome begins to tick. Close by, glass shivers. You can’t see the room, but you can feel it: cold rising off flat surfaces on every side, your breath ringing back at you. Mirrors. Dozens of them.

Then you hear a second breath, out of rhythm with yours. And a third. The reflections are breathing on their own.

Choice 1 · A whisper at your ear: “Take off the blindfold. Look at yourself. Just once.”

A. Pull the blindfold down

Your reflection is smiling. You are not. Its palm presses flat against the glass, and the glass gives like water. The ribbon goes slack as your partner is dragged one way and you the other. The metronome skips. Darkness. Choose again.

B. Find your partner’s hand and breathe together

You inhale for four counts and exhale for four. Your partner matches you. The rogue breathing stutters, confused, then fades. In contemporary, shared breath is shared timing. The mirrors fall quiet. Correct — continue to Part 2.

C. Run toward the whisper

Your linked leg doesn’t move when you do. You hit the floor hard, and somewhere behind the glass, something laughs. Choose again.

Part 2: The floor tilts

The floor begins to tilt, slow as a ship rolling in a storm. Bare feet slide. To your right, glass cracks, and you hear a footstep that belongs to neither of you. The first reflection has a foot out of the mirror.

The metronome speeds up. “Contemporary,” the Choreographer purrs, “is surrender. Let’s see if you know the difference between surrender and collapse.”

Choice 2 · The floor is tipping. What do you do?

A. Freeze and wait it out

Stillness isn’t safety here. Out of the dark, a cold hand settles on your shoulder — your own hand, only colder. Choose again.

B. Grip wrists and counterbalance

You grip each other’s wrists and lean back, two weights trusting one center. The tilt can’t topple what is balanced. The cracked mirror seals itself with a sound like ice refreezing. Correct — continue to Part 3.

C. Try a lift

Blind, bound at the ankle, on a tilting floor — the lift fails before it starts. You land in a heap while the reflections lean closer to watch. Choose again.

Part 3: The final pose

The ticking stops. In the silence, every mirror in the room speaks with your voice: “Finish it. Give us an ending.”

You can feel the reflections pressing against the glass, hungry, waiting for the moment you reach for them. Your partner’s breath is steady against your shoulder. The ribbon at your ankle pulses, warm now, like a heartbeat.

Choice 3 · How do you end the dance?

A. Reach toward your reflection

Your fingertips meet glass, and the glass reaches back. For one terrible second you can’t tell which side you’re on. Choose again.

B. Melt to the floor together and roll through

You spiral down as one — shoulder, hip, floor — and roll out of the turn into a low, shared shape. No reaching, no running, only weight given to the ground. It’s the most honest movement you’ve made all night. The mirrors split one after another, like a held breath let go. Correct — you’re free. Read the ending.

The door behind the glass

When the last mirror falls, cold air pours in from behind it. A doorway. Beyond it, a velvet corridor, and somewhere down that corridor, slow and deliberate, footsteps: heels clicking on old tile, circling.

“One door down,” the Choreographer murmurs. “You found your center. Next, you’ll have to trust someone else’s.” The blindfold stays. The ribbon stays. And the footsteps are getting closer.

The next door is open

Chapter 2 · Argentine Tango: Footsteps in the Dark

The footsteps you heard beyond the glass belong to a phantom dancer who lost his partner long ago. Only a true Argentine tango embrace will keep yours.

The real performance behind this chapter

The mirror room is fiction, but its dance style comes straight from this season’s ballroom. On Dedication Night, Oct. 20, 2026, Julia Stiles and pro Ezra Sosa danced a contemporary routine to Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” dedicated to her late 10 Things I Hate About You co-star Heath Ledger. The routine ended with castmates from the film joining her in the ballroom, and the couple earned 36 out of 40.

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba told Stiles that contemporary is about “expression of the soul and opening up the heart.” That’s the thread the mirror room pulls on. Contemporary doesn’t let a dancer hide behind steps — and in the Midnight Palace, neither can you.

How to dance your way free: the contemporary toolkit

Each correct choice in the story is a real contemporary principle. Here’s what they look like on a studio floor, eyes open:

Shared breath. Partners often begin by syncing their breathing. Inhaling to rise and exhaling to release gives two bodies the same internal count, even without music.

Counterbalance. Holding wrists and leaning away from each other turns two bodies into one balanced shape. Neither dancer can hold the position alone, which is exactly why it builds trust.

Release and floor work. Contemporary treats the floor as a partner, not a place you fall. Dancers spiral down through the shoulder and hip, then roll out, giving their weight to the ground instead of fighting it.

Honesty over tricks. In the story, the lift and the reach fail because they’re about showing off or grabbing at an image. Contemporary rewards the opposite: movement that tells the truth.
